The Horses of Summers Past

Once there was a time when I,
still wandering, came to stop
where the ocean met with the morning sky
and we lived upon a mountain top

The lady and the gentleman
who loved me as a son,
a brother, or their oldest friend,
whose trust I somehow won

Through lifetimes they have known me,
souls on a pre-charted course,
wherein find we our true destiny
as keepers of the horse

Their share was a part to play
that would take them to foreign lands
while on the mountain I did stay
with the reins left in my hands

All alone as the seasons passed
with the dogs I'd ride by the sea
on a horse I now believe was fast
as any horse could be

Winding tunnel trails and wide open meadows
flew by so fast the wind shut our eyes
riding sightless through the nighttime canyon shadows
from the blue light of the new moonrise

Then one day a distant voice
in the wind so chillingly
told me that I had no choice,
the horizon summoned me

And so I bid them all farewell,
promising to return.
No way at that time to tell
what was mine to learn

One more ride as the sun sets,
never dreamed it would be my last,
and now I never will forget
the horses of summers past
