About Dr. Howard Liddle

Dr. Howard Liddle is a nationally recognized family psychologist who specializes in adolescent substance abuse. He is Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology and Director of the University of Miami Center for Treatment Research on Adolescent Drug Abuse.

His research has been recognized with career achievement awards from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, the American Psychological Association, and the Florida Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Dr. Liddle is an active grant reviewer for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), and he serves on expert panels in the area of adolescent substance abuse within these and other federal agencies. He is an editorial board member of numerous scientific journals including the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, the Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse, Family Process, and the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.

His empirically-based therapy approach has been of interest to clinicians in a variety of treatment settings, and this recognition has led to many invited talks, workshops, and lectureships in the United States and abroad. This therapy approach is recognized as among the few available empirically supported treatments for adolescent drug abuse in the new NIDA publication, Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment. Similar recognition also came in the clinical model's inclusion in the CSAT Treatment Improvement Protocol Series (TIP #32): Treatment of Adolescents with Substance Abuse Disorders, in the CSAT Multisite Cannabais Youth Treatment Initiative, its more recent Exemplary Adolescent Treatment Model Inititiave, as well as the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention/Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (CSAP/OJJDP) Strengthening Families initiative on exemplary evidence-based or best practices. Dr. Liddle currently works with various state substance abuse treatment administrations to introduce multidimensional family therapy into these systems of care for drug involved adolescents.
