Tobacco use poses an enormous public health problem. It is the single greatest cause of disease and premature death in America today. Worldwide, more than 1 billion people smoke, and tobacco is responsible for more than 4 million deaths each year. Unfortunately, the decision to smoke is usually made before the age of 18 - without regard for the long-term health consequences. Incorporating tobacco use prevention and quit smoking programs within the health care delivery system is good public health policy and should become a routine part of caregiving.
