Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of progressive dementia, is a devastating diagnosis. Today, four million Americans suffer from this disease. According to the Alzheimer's Association, if a cure or prevention is not found soon, more than 14 million of today's baby boomers will develop Alzheimer's disease by the middle of this century. November is National Alzheimer's Disease Month and National Family Caregivers' Month. Today's newsletter focuses on this growing healthcare problem.

Forgetfulness: It's Not Always What You Think
The term dementia describes a group of symptoms that are caused by changes in brain function. Dementia symptoms may include asking the same questions repeatedly; becoming lost in familiar places; being unable to follow directions; getting disoriented about time, people, and places; and neglecting personal safety, hygiene, and nutrition.

The goal of the guidelines is to promote proficiency and expertise in assessing dementia and age-related cognitive decline in clinical practice.

Treatment of Agitation in Older Persons with Dementia
The guidelines offer guidance on initial diagnosis and long-term management of agitation. Specific syndromes of agitation, including delirium, psychosis, depression, anxiety, insomnia, aggression and anger are also outlined.
