Dear Colleagues,

Mental health practitioners and advocates have long been opposed to disparity in healthcare coverage for those with mental illnesses. The elderly are not immune to this discrimination, and the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry is calling for an end to the current Medicare law that imposes a discriminatory 50 percent co-payment on outpatient treatment of mental disorders. For an excellent presentation of the issue, see the statement of Stephen Bartels, MD, MS, president of AAGP posted at http://www.aagpgpa.org/advocacy/testimony_starkwellstone.asp.

People who have serious changes in their memory, personality, and behavior may suffer from a form of brain disease called dementia. Dementia seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities. Alzheimer's disease is one of many types of dementia.
